Canova Wind Turbine will be operational soon

Work continues on the 108 kW wind turbine that is being constructed just northwest of the Canova Co-op in Canova, SD.

Local contractors Bob’s Electric, Kramer Construction, and Dawson’s Construction have been working on preparing electrical lines, cement and dirt work to make the site ready for the retrofitted turbine that should be operational before July 4th.

Last week, over 56 yards of cement were poured to secure the turbine that will take some 28 days to cure. The turbine is identical to the two turbines already operational in Howard since October of 2001.

“We are excited be part of bringing this development to Canova especially in time for their All-School Reunion,” Steve Scott, of Energy Maintenance Services (EMS). “This is a great example of what small communities can do to revitalize themselves.”

Xcel Energy who currently provides the power to the City of Canova will purchase the electricity produced by the turbine. Easements and contracts with landowner Dave Gassman and Xcel Energy will allow the City of Canova to produce and sell the electricity.

The payment of the turbines is made possible by the Fund for Rural America Grant secured by Miner County Community Revitalization (MCCR.)

A second turbine is planned for the City of Carthage in early fall.
