Howard -- Recognizing that the community’s appearance says a lot about the community, a group of adults and youth have created a project to beautify Howard’s Main Street with flowers. With nearly $1100 already raised in donations, hanging flowerpots will start appearing on light poles within the month.

The project received its start when the Miner County Chapter of Thrivent Financial #30601 heard that the Project Pride committee was trying to beautify the main streets of the county’s towns. Thrivent was looking for a group of adults and youth to sponsor who were interested in creating a Join Hands Project.

Join Hands is a national project encouraging youth and adults to come together to create a service project in their community. After the local Thrivent chapter decided to fund a project based in Howard, the Project Pride committee contacted a group of youth and together they developed the idea of hanging flowers along Main Street.

The flowers will be placed in planters costing $100 each. The City of Howard has agreed to provide the watering equipment and to water the plants each weekday morning. Additional volunteers will take care of the plants on weekends.

In order for flowers to be placed on every light pole, however, it is estimated that an additional $1400 will need to be raised. Anyone interested in helping with the purchase of a planter is encouraged to contact Faye Oines at 772-4646.

Developed out of the MCCR Economic Development Committee, Project Pride is an effort to beautify Miner County. Several projects are currently under development throughout the county.
