Nacelle Display at Farm Show

In order for people to learn more about the wind turbines, Energy Maintenance Service (EMS) displayed the nacelle of  a pre-retrofitted turbine at the 2002 Howard Farm and Home Show.  The nacelle weights 9,500 lbs and provides the outer casing for the turbine's generator.

The first step in constructing a turbine involves the construction of a concrete base with reinforced rebar.  In the picture to the right, one can see the large bolts that are used to bolt the turbine to the base.

The tower consists of three tubular sections  of steel that are lifted into position by a crane and bolted together.  Once together the tower stands 80 feet tall and is ready for the nacelle to be lifted into place.

Blades used for Turbines in Howard

The turbine blades are the last pieces to be attached and are transported on a semi-flat bed trailer.  Each blade is made of fiberglass and is 29 feet long.
