Miner County Recognized Importance of Senior Living Options

Realizing that housing options for seniors are changing, MCCR sat down and asked seniors  what types of senior living opportunities they would like to see developed in the community. At the time, any Miner County seniors looking to move out of their homes only had an option to move into a nursing home, subsidized apartments, or traditional apartments.  Seniors provide input into housing needs

During these conversations, seniors repeatedly stated that they wanted to see the same types of housing options available in Miner County as in larger communities.  These requests have led to numerous efforts to create a continuum of housing opportunities for seniors.  The information below identifies the variety of housing options now available to seniors in the community.

Independent Housing Units:  The Howard Good Samaritan Center, a recognized leader in nursing home care, was the first to develop a new housing option for seniors. In 2000, they opened the Northview Apartments as independent housing units.  Located just north of their nursing home facility in Howard, these twin-home apartments have two bedrooms, in-floor radiant heat, and an attached garage.  An instant success, these homes had a waiting list before they were completed.

Nursing Home Care: As mentioned above, the Howard Good Samaritan Center has been a longer-term provider of quality nursing home care in Miner County.

Assisted Living: Seniors looking for an independent lifestyle with some elements of adult care, may consider Whispering Winds Assisted Living or the Howard Good Samaritan Center assisted living wing.

Sunrise Terrace:  Another housing well-established senior housing option is the HUD subsidized Sunrise Terrace complex.  Open to people of all income groups, this complex offers people on fixed incomes a quality home at an affordable price.  Located on the northeast corner of Howard, Sunrise Terrace looks out over the golf course and provides a quiet, relaxing setting.

Apartments:  Miner County is also home to several traditional apartments that are well suited for seniors.  These include:  Chestnut Apartments, the Dornbusch Apartments,  and Westside Apartments.
